Matthew E. Butler

Senior Visual Effects Supervisor

With multiple Academy Award nominations, Matthew E. Butler is a top visual effects supervisor, renown for his ability to make visual effects grounded in real world science principles. When director Steven Spielberg wanted to create the gritty reality of the 2045 Ohio environment in “Ready Player One,” Matthew was tasked with the job, and has received OSCAR, BAFTA and VES nominations for the work.

Matthew is a well-rounded VFX Supervisor with extensive experience in post, and a fully comfortable on set. His experience on set includes many features films including the highly anticipated “Morbius” by director Daniel Espinosa, currently in production in London.

He was the Visual Effects Supervisor on “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” which earned Matthew an Academy Award nomination, and on “Pixels,” “Ender’s Game,” “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor,” “Flags of Our Fathers,” and “Letters from Iwo Jima.” For more than 25 years, Matthew has brought his technical and artistic expertise to 22 full-length feature films, including “Titanic,” “Apollo 13,” “Fight Club,” “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” “xXx,” and “The Day After Tomorrow.” In addition to Steven Spielberg, Matthew has worked with many acclaimed directors including Michael Bay, Clint Eastwood, James Cameron and Chris Columbus.

Matthew holds a B.S. in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Manchester UK and an M.S. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.
